Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of healthcare that was developed in China over 2000 years ago as a method of treating imbalances in the body that could lead to illness and disease through the balancing of energy systems (or qi) within the body.

Chinese physicians also made the connection between emotions and the physical affect it has in causing ill health, understanding that to maintain good health the person must be able to cope with emotional states in a measured and appropriate way.

Developed through thousands of years of rigorous patient studies, acupuncturists are able to diagnose which aspects and organs are not functioning in the correct way and treat individual patients accordingly. The main techniques used by acupuncturists involve inserting ultra-fine needles into the body or by moxibustion – where a herb is burnt close to the skin to warm the skin, blood and tissue. However other techniques such as massage or cupping may also be used in clinic depending on the patient’s complaint.

From a Western medical perspective acupuncture is able to trigger many different systems which results in the improvement of underlying health issues, such as increasing or decreasing hormone production, modulating immune response and reducing inflammation.
