Cupping
Cupping therapy is a widely used technique used throughout Eastern medicine traditions, but also in other cultures from North Africa to Eastern Europe. It involves placing glass (or silicon) cups directly onto the skin under which a vacuum is created, causing a suction which draws the skin and tissue upwards and away from the body to increase the flow of blood and fluids (a bit like a reverse massage, where the skin is pulled up instead of pushed down).
Cupping is fantastic for releasing tight muscles causing tension in the upper body (it is therefore very popular with patients who work desk-based jobs and hold tension in their neck and shoulders). It is also used for strengthening the lungs and the immune system, so is great for patients with respiratory issues and reoccurring coughs and colds.
Cupping is used as an adjunct to acupuncture treatments, as the cups are rarely left on for more than 5 minutes. We use the sliding cups technique where we apply massage oil to the skin first, and move the cups across various points on the back so the suction is not too strong. Despite it’s appearance it is actually quite a relaxing treatment! Please note the circular marks left by cupping treatments are not bruises (they are not painful to touch as they are not tissue trauma) and disperse usually within 48 hours.
